Day trip #8
Hate being on kitchen crew, because I have to wake up early to have breakfast ready. It is especially rough on day trip mornings because I have to wake up even earlier.
We then drove to the Cambridge American WW2 Memorial. We were given a tour around it. Apparently it is one of twenty-four American memorials on foreign soil. They are maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission. This memorial is the only American WWII burial ground in England. There are 3,812 American military dead buried there. On the wall running from the entrance to the chapel are inscribed the names of 5,126 Americans who gave their lives in the service of their country, but whose remains were never recovered or identified. Most of these died in the Battle of the Atlantic of in the strategic air bombardment of Northwest Europe during WWII.
After, we went to Cambridge. We went to King’s College and went inside the chapel there. It’s kind of cool that a “college” has its own massive, ornate chapel. We walked around Cambridge and went to the Fitzwilliam Museum. They have a very eclectic assortment, consisting of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts; an extensive collection of paintings by artists such as Monet, Picasso, Rubens, and Titian; as well as a modern art wing; and many statues. It was a very nice museum. After the museum we went to Lion Yard Market, which was a disappointment because it was small and didn’t have much to look at. I did by a cheap snack at a little Thai food stand, as well as a sweatshirt that is a little too big, but it was on sale because a bird pooped on it… what can I say... I like a good deal… besides, it will wash right out. Cambridge is a lot more beautiful than Oxford. The grounds are beautiful; there are so many trees and flowers, and there is a river running around it that you can go punting on.
Had a good time today, but I feel like the day trips are getting less and less eventful, and that they give us too much free time that just ends up being a waste.
We arrived back in London and went to Tuk Tuk Thai Noodle for dinner. Love it! I got a mixed seafood red curry that was really good! I would definitely get it again, but without mussels next time. Haha, after dinner Allyson and I parted ways with our friends and went into every single souvenir shop on Queensway. I am not exaggerating! Haha we went into every single one looking for a Princess Diana mug for Allyson’s mum, a Union Jack alarm clock for Ally, and a Union Jack purse for me! Didn’t find what I wanted, but I know it’s out there! Allyson did get the mug for her mum. It’s hilarious!
