Pretty much the worst day ever, but I did my best to make the best of it. Went on our third day trip today. We drove to Dover early in the morning and went to Dover Castle. While there, we were looking at an old Roman lighthouse. As we were descending an embankment, I slipped on the wet grass and mud, and fell down. As I fell, my camera flew out of my hands and went crashing on the pavement. Yup, my lens broke off completely. I was covered in mud and very shook up. Not fun. I was very upset. My professor was right there when it happened, as well as a handful of other students. It was kind of embarrassing, and I hated receiving everybody’s pity. Ya, it sucked. Luckily no swear words escaped my lips… that would have been awkward. Allyson helped me to find a bathroom to wipe all the mud off of me. The suckiest part was that it happened right at the beginning of our day trip, so I didn’t have my camera the entire day and I was very muddy. Very sad. Thankfully I think the body still works, just got a bit scratched. The lens though is ruined. I’m still going to see if it can be repaired, but I am not hopeful. Ergh!!! So frustrating. Allyson pointed out, though, that it is a good thing that I did not break my leg or something. That would have ruined the rest of Europe for sure. Now I just have to find a lens ASAP because I am going to Venice next week, and want my camera… obviously!

Dover was so-so. I was very upset/distressed about my camera, so I didn’t really get to enjoy it as much as I would have hoped to. I still tried to make the most of it. Before going up to the Roman lighthouse, we went into the secret wartime tunnels that went underground between the castle and the cliff side. They were massive. An entire community could have existed down there. They even had a hospital wing that was fairly large. The castle was pretty cool, they had done it up all touristy on the inside, so it didn’t look very realistic. We went on top of the castle – such a fantastic view! We could even see the coast of France. We barely got to see the white cliffs. Originally we weren’t going to go and see them at all, but last minute the professors decided we could make a quick stop. Well we would have if one girl didn’t go off on her own and not meet back at the bus on time. Everyone was sitting on the bus waiting for her. She showed up nearly half an hour later. The professors were not happy. Nor was I, because we didn’t get to see the white cliffs, because we ran out of time.
After Dover we went to Canterbury. The town is beautiful. I really liked all the small cobblestone streets and little shops. We went to St. Augustine’s Abbey, mainly a bunch of ruins, because Henry VIII destroyed it when he was king. We took some funny photos there, but that was the extent of the fun that that place offered. We then walked to Canterbury Cathedral. We had just read Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, so that was pretty cool. I really like Canterbury Cathedral. It was very pretty.

When we got back to the Centre, they gave us each £5 for dinner. Allyson and I went to our favorite place… Tesco (grocery store). Haha we really like how cheap their ready made food is. Later in the evening we watched Phantom of the Opera with a group in our servery. I had never scene it before and still have no idea what it is about, because I couldn’t hear it very well. Excitement… we bought Mika tickets! I can’t wait to go to that concert! Ahhh! Excited!
